The Restoration of Victoria Baths 'Manchester's Water Palace'

Victoria Baths - Manchester

Since its closure in 1993, a movement started to protect the Victoria Baths; 'Manchester's Water Palace' and to restore the building - bringing it back gloriously and respectfully.

Today it is heartening to learn that the beautiful, Victoria Baths has been more than partially restored. The works funded by a number of sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund which came to Victoria Baths as a result of winning BBC TV's Restoration programme; aired in 2003 can you believe!

The building is now a heritage visitor attraction and an event's venue. The vision is to fully restore the building, bringing public leisure facilties back into use. The long-term aim is to have, once again, public swimming at Victoria Baths.

By special arrangement and formally managed one-offs; Victoria Baths can allow people in the pool. This September 2019 the Swim For Restoration at Victoria Baths funding event took place. This was only the third time in recent times that this heritage centre site was able to welcome participants in the pool.

Swimming aside, the centre attracts visitors to be witness to the restoration work. To see the rich, deep coloured, highly glazed tiles in Edwardian designs that were especially commissioned.  To view the stained glass windows and the ornate interiors housed in this wonderful old building designed by architect, Henry Price, that first opened its doors in 1906.
