| Author Allan Ahlberg and Illustrator Janet Ahlberg pictured with their daughter, Jessica in 1989 source - The Guardian Newspaper 2013 Author Allan Ahlberg (1939-2025) Following the recent loss of the award winning children's author, Allan Ahlberg and reflecting on his verse and prose, one acknowledges that his work was classic children’s storytelling in the truest sense. Born in 1938 it is obvious that Ahlberg called on decades of his early life and simpler times to compile his stories; which took a nostalgic look at the ordinary characters and characteristics of British life. Arguably, one of the last authors telling stories traditonally and somewhat old fashionedly about twentieth century childhoods. Illustrator #7 Janet Ahlberg (1944 to 1994)
Janet Ahlberg, in parntership with husband, Allan, created line illustrations that were an ideal match for his whimsical children's stories. Her figurative work, largely little pen and ink drawings, were cute and full of character and she too was observant of a certain working class childhood and a small, safe world inhabited. Ahlberg's black and white illustrations appear as little miniatures across chapter headings and within the text of young, middle years fiction books including The Bear Nobody Wanted. Of course, Janet Ahlberg also created full colour illustrations for many picture book titles including The Jolly Postman interactive book and its sequels.
