Lottie Dolls and STEM Education

Marketing and advertising always worked a dream on my daughter when growing up. The Disney franchise in particular. The fashion doll however, came second to a long phase my daughter had of playing with her baby dolls. I never encouraged or discouraged her in her choice to play traditional maternal and home maker roles when it came to role play. I just felt she was expressing her imagination at the time, nothing more than that.

Nevertheless, I do remember some mothers being strongly adverse to their girls playing with the dolls, and Dads cliche ribbing the boys if they wanted to join in. At the Steiner school (where both my daughter and son attended) the emphasis was always on toys being made from natural materials, acting plays, art and music and playing outdoors. My daughter did all of that too, but she just liked to take her plastic baby dolls along for the ride!

Is the child playing with a wasp-waisted, long-legged, big-boobed, cash-loaded Barbie doll along with the adult looking boyfriend, Ken (minus genitals) and all of their endless wardrobe items and fashion accessories impacted in negative ways? Likewise, dressing Action Men figures ready for 'cool' combat, or equipping them to carry out heroic acts by dropping from a great height, meant we were (and still are) stereo typing our children, and in some subliminal way they were (are) stereo typifying themselves. Quite possibly, yes, and most definitely what is happening early in is that the gender positioning in both the girl/boy psyche is being set.

Pressure group 'Let Toys Be Toys' reports that an increasing number of parents and carers now say are avoiding gender-stereotyped play. Prejudices will be overcome in time. Attitudes will change.
