Book Review

Since I've been dabbling in quilting projects I've not come across such a detailed and helpful applique instruction book as this one. Mainly the applique designs are from the natural world, and of cats๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜ธ and dogs ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿถtoo. Certain dog pedigrees are re-created with character depth and precision i.e. Bichon Frise, DachshundLabrador Retriever and the Corgi (see below); and there is a special word from the author about depicting cats in applique.

All patterns are traceable with handy tip sharing provided to make this easier. The birds and insects, the flowers and fauna are fiddly but exquisite and satisfyingly good if executed well.

From a larger quilt : Hummingbirds and Fuchsia by Carol Armstrong

What appeals to me as an artist, being one who immediately sees in my mind's eye a way to go with design concepts of my own, is that the author devotes a page acknowledging that some makers like to be fluid and prefer not to take a copycat approach to quilt making. Armstrong gives a few helpful pointers toward designing ones' own patterns.

Included: a tools and materials guide, stitching techniques shown and finishing tips given, also whole projects that incorporate the applique motifs from the book: tote bag where one can produce any of the applique designs of their choosing, and some rather nice bird themed quilt squares in subdued colours (an ideal for a beginner to undertake).

Another excellent quilting book from the same publisher as above is: Free Spirit Block Party. Please read my Amazon review of that one
